Dear Zackenberger’s

The board of Danish Polar Center (DPC) has approved to keep Zackenberg Research Station open for users during the winter 2007-8 as a Danish contribution to IPY - but only if there is an interest in the international research community for using this facility for winter studies. Therefore, DPC now issues a call for Letters - of - Intent from potential users and research projects during that period.

DPC is allocating means up to 2.2 mio. DKK for the logistics of a winter opening which - pending the number and quality of possible projects and number of proposed project-days at Zackenberg during September 2007 through May 2008 - can be used as co-funding of the winter opening.

If there is an interest in the research community for over-wintering at Zackenberg, DPC will invite qualified projects to a planning workshop with participation of PI’s of approved projects to decide on details concerning the over-wintering, incl. relevant number of researchers and staff at the station during winter, a balancing of service level in relation to accommodation costs as well as detailed budgeting of the logistics costs. DPC expects a limited co-financing from the approved research projects participating in the over-wintering.

Therefore, DPC kindly encourages interested scientists or research groups to submit a Letter-of-Intent by e-mail () no later than Friday 15 December 2006 to Danish Polar Center, Strandgade 102, DK-1401 Copenhagen K, Denmark. The Letter-of-Intent must include

  1. A project description
  2. A time schedule indicating planned number of persons at Zackenberg Research Station in specific time periods
  3. Curriculum vitae for each project participant

The Letters-of-Intent will be evaluated by Zackenberg Ecological Research Operations'  Working Group. No later than 26 January 2007, decisions will be taken whether or not there is sufficient interest for doing research at Zackenberg during the winter 2007-8 to keep the station open, - and which projects will be approved for the winter period.

Further information concerning Zackenberg Research Station can be obtained on the station's website (www.zackenberg.dk) or by contacting Station Manager, Dr. Morten Rasch ().

Yours sincerely
