Regions in Greenland Facts pertinent to research projects and expeditions

Thule region

From Melville Bugt to Humboldt Glacier you will find several small communities with the town Qaanaaq as the administrative center of the region. The Inland ice is a very dominating landscape element clearly seen from almost anywhere in the region. The region is mountainous, but the general view is a geological peneplain cut by deep valleys or fjords with glacier tongues.

The climate is high arctic and the vegetation is mainly scattered heath vegetation.
The sea and fjords are frozen from October to July.

Qaanaaq with an adjacent airport is the gateway to the region together with the annual ship connection from the south. Regular air service is maintained from Kangerlussuaq and a helicopter provides local flights.

Hunting is the main base for the local economy.
