Nordic Arctic Research Seminar

Copenhagen 20-21 February, 1997

A. H. Hoel & M. Meldgaard
Danish Polar Center Publications No. 3, 1997    Price: 20 DKK.

In recent years the Arctic has become increasingly important as one of the last regions of vast pristine wilderness. It has also become evident that natural processes in the Arctic are crucial to the global climate, as demonstrated by the large scale processes in the Greenland Sea.
The meeting in Copenhagen, February 1997, was initiated and organised by the Nordic Polar Research Committee in response to the "Programme on Cooperation in the Arctic Region" adopted by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 1996.The following two proposals are the main result of the seminar:The establishment of a framework of Nordic cooperation in Polar Research (NOCOPOR), with a number of concrete activities linked to the overall goal of improving coordination of research facilities, funding and information exchange, and actual research initiatives.
Formalisation of the Nordic Polar Research Committee to provide for liaison between the responsible Nordic research authorities and agencies and the Nordic Council of Ministers and international science bodies.
